How Normalization in SSC CGL EXAM will affect the marking scheme

What does Normalization in SSC Exams mean?
In simpler words, Normalization is a process done to examine and scrutinize the performance of the candidates on the basis of similar examination parameters. The objective of this process is to adjust the difficulty level across different shifts of the exam. SSC has recently uploaded an official notice regarding Normalization in all the SSC Exams 2018-19. In this notification, SSC has revealed a formula for Normalization which will be used to calculate final score of candidates in the multi-shift examinations.
Need for Normalization
In this age of high competition, the number of exams is conducted in multiple shifts where millions of aspirant’s battles out for selection in an online competitive exam. It is impossible to set the same difficulty level of the exam. As a result, the marks scored by the candidates in different shifts vary. The biggest problem is to confront this problem successfully to screen out best possible candidates. So, to sort out this problem accurately, we need the process of Normalization.
 Normalization in SSC Exams 2018-19
Technically speaking, Normalization can be described as a process which is done to adjust values measured on different scales to a notionally common scale. Normalization is primarily done to scrutinize the performance of the candidates as per examination parameters. The concept of Normalization plays a vital role in adjusting the difficulty levels across different shifts of the exam. For instance, last year, the Tier-I stage of SSC CGL exam was conducted in more than 40 shifts where several students were complaining about unevenness in the difficulty level of questions. As a result, many of the students felt that it was unfair to evaluate their result and feels that this recruitment drive lacks justice. Hence, SSC CGL Notification 2021 is now following the process of Normalization.

In recent SSC  official notifications, they have clearly stated that marks scored by candidates in Tier-I and Tier-II will be Normalized. The process of Normalization will use a formula to calculate the score of the candidates. The marks scored by the candidates and the actual number of valid questions in the various shifts will be taken as input.
Formula for SSC Normalization
After learning about Normalization process, we would advise students should not worry about easy or difficult shifts. You are required to stay focus on your preparations and work hard to crack exam. To evaluate candidate’s performance in exam, SSC has formulated a formula which will help deserving candidates to a great extent in the selection procedure.
The Normalization process is the most efficient tool to clear any sort of dispute between the difficulty levels of papers. It is almost impossible that all exam shifts paper sets would have similar difficulty level of questions or have identical questions. SSC can add a mark or two in the total score of the candidates if they feel that the shift was very difficult in comparison to other shifts. SSC can also deduct a mark or two if they feel that the shift was very simple in comparison to other shifts as per to their rules, formula, and guidelines for normalization. It is known that Normalization is a process based on the particular formula and some parameters have been decided by SSC, the examination organizing committee will derive the formula to calculate the normalized marks for the multi-session papers. The different formula for normalization of marks will depend on different exam patterns.
In the end, we can conclude, the process of Normalization is a remedy to all inequalities in marking score of candidates and has come to action to provide transparency and win faith of candidates.  This process proves the sanctity of SSC and promises a fair competition for all the aspiring candidates.
All the Best!!!
