Which is the better option for job, SSC CGL or BANK PO?

The aspirants looking for government jobs usually opt for SSC CGL Exam or BANK PO Exam. Most of them think that Staff Selection Commission offers better options than Bank Exams, but it is not the case. 

It all depends on the individual priorities; those seeking for job security prefer bank jobs over SSC Exams. SSC gives various job growth opportunities with a rise in social status. Bank jobs offer high salary but growth is slow.

The SSC carry out CGL exam for various government posts such as Central Secretariat Service, CAG, Exercise Inspector, Statistical Investigator, Central Vigilance Commission, AO, Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Railways/ Defence/ External Affairs, CBI and a few others Ministries. It is a government job where as bank recruits various aspirants through IBPS Exam for various posts.

Eligibility criteria
The age limit for SSC is different than bank exams. IBPS Bank clerk exam has a maximum age limit is 28 years and for SSC Exam the maximum age limit is 27years. For IBPS PO Exam the maximum age limit is 30 years.
Job Profile
SSC Jobs will involve tasks like:
  • attending to queries,
  • taking notes, filing,
  • administrative work,
  • field work,
  • carrying out surveillance,
  • Inspection and raids, etc.
  • Bank jobs involve following tasks:
  • Providing customer service,
  • Managing clearance of payments,
  • Conducting official communication,
  • Managing accounts, handling cash transactions, etc.

Opportunities to advance

Banks give better promotion offers as compared to SSC Jobs. In case you have a good department then SSC will give you rapid growth and promotion such as income tax officer can become assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner and then commissioner. An auditor can become a senior auditor. In case of bank jobs order of promotion typically involves Bank PO, Assistant Manager, Branch Manager, AGM and finally GM.

Though the pay scale at entry level is almost same in case of both the sectors SSC and Bank, it depends upon the capabilities which further give promotions.
  1. Nature of Jobs
The experience earned in the private jobs is helpful in doing bank jobs but it is not of much use in SSC based jobs.
    2. Transfer
Both the jobs are transferable as there is government sector based jobs. Bank jobs have more transfers than SSC jobs.
   3. Work strain
Bank PO job involves customer services which need proper training to understand the working of the bank systems. SSC CGL needs strict supervision and has lot of political pressure on various occasions due to the involvement of ministers in the department
  4. Job Security
SSC jobs offer better job security than bank jobs as they are purely government jobs but bank jobs are not so directly related to the government sector.
